Right after the September Community Day, something strange happened: Almost every Pokémon in the wild turned into a strange, nut-headed, liquid-metal-bodied new Pokémon no one had ever seen before. It's shadow was on every Radar. It flooded every PokeStop. The internet dubbed it "Nutto" but, when you caught it, it transformed into Ditto.

Turns out, it's a brand new Mythical Pokémon named Meltan, and it's being used to bring Pokémon Go gamers to the upcoming Pokémon Let's Go games on Nintendo.

Here's what we know so far!

October 10, 2018: More on Meltan and the Pokémon Let's Go connection

From Pokemon Go:

Since the existence of the Mythical Pokémon Meltan has been discovered, further research has brought new information about its biology! Meltan appears to be cute and innocent, and we are excited to learn more as research continues. Professor Willow and the Kanto region's Professor Oak have apparently made some progress in their investigation, so be sure to check out their latest video!

What's more, Professor Willow needs you to do some Special Research to seek out the Mythical Pokémon Meltan! Look for this Special Research to begin later this year. You'll also learn more about the details of the investigation Professor Willow and Professor Oak carried out to unlock the mysteries of Meltan. Conduct research alongside the Professor and catch Meltan!

From Pokemon Let's Go:

We now know that Meltan appears in Pokémon GO. In order to catch Meltan, it is essential to have a Mystery Box, which can be received by sending Pokémon from Pokémon GO to Pokémon: Let's Go, Pikachu! or Pokémon: Let's Go, Eevee!

Sending Pokémon from Pokémon GO into one of the Nintendo Switch titles will get you certain items in the app, such as Candies for the species of Pokémon you sent. However, the first time you send a Pokémon, you'll also be able to get a very special item: a Mystery Box!

The Mystery Box closes itself after it's used once. The only way to open it again is to wait a set amount of time, and then send another Pokémon to Pokémon: Let's Go, Pikachu! or Pokémon: Let's Go, Eevee! You can also get a Mystery Box for sending Pokémon to a friend's Nintendo Switch game, but you can only have one Mystery Box at a time!

Meltan will begin to appear once a Mystery Box is opened in Pokémon GO, but be careful—they'll only appear for the player that opened the Mystery Box. Touch a Meltan you see on the field map, and then try to catch it with a Poké Ball!

You can then bring the Meltan you catch in Pokémon GO to Pokémon: Let's Go, Pikachu! or Pokémon: Let's Go, Eevee!, where it can follow you around during your adventure in the Kanto region. Even if you don't catch Meltan in Pokémon GO yourself, you can ask a friend to send one that they've caught into your Nintendo Switch game.

And it does indeed look like Meltan has a BIGGER secret to come...

Um, what is Meltan?

That's the question everyone is asking. For the last few days, no one knew for sure. Some thought it was a glitch. Others, the first tease of Gen 9 (?!). Others, a weird cross-promotion with Nintendo to bring Pokémon Go players to Pokémon Let's Go on Nintendo.

The last one seems to have been the most accurate. Here's what Pokémon Go has finally revealed:

A mysterious Pokémon suddenly began appearing all over the world in recent days. Have you spotted it yet?

Ditto all over the world have been transforming into this Pokémon, which has now been identified as the Mythical Pokémon Meltan!

It seems that Professor Willow has already contacted Professor Oak in the Kanto region, and the two have been cooperating in their investigation of Meltan! Please check the Pokémon YouTube channel for more on their efforts!

Sightings of Ditto that have transformed into Meltan are still being reported. If you haven't encountered one, it's time to get out there and GO!

And here's what the Pokémon Company has revealed:

A new species of Pokémon—one that nobody has ever seen before—has been discovered! This Pokémon is called Meltan, and as of now, it is quite the enigma.

  • Name: Meltan
  • Category: Hex Nut Pokémon
  • Type: Steel
  • Height: 0'08"
  • Weight: 17.6 lbs.

Most of Meltan's body is made from liquid metal, and its shape is very fluid. It can use its liquid arms and legs to corrode metal and absorb it into its own body.

Meltan generates electricity using the metal it absorbs from outside sources. It uses this electricity as an energy source and also as an attack that can be fired from its eye.

Clearly a curious Pokémon, Meltan is very expressive and shows an interest in all kinds of things.

Many reports have come in about sightings of Ditto in Pokémon GO that have transformed into Meltan. The number of sightings has significantly decreased over the past few days, but it appears these "Meltan" are still appearing in various areas.

Research is being conducted on these appearances of Meltan, but we have learned that Pokémon GO is somehow key to meeting this curious new Pokémon in Pokémon: Let's Go, Pikachu! and Pokémon: Let's Go, Eevee! We'll be sure to provide updates as we discover more!

Can you still catch Molten in Pokémon Go?

Yes and no. While the flood of Meltan immediately following Community Day only lasted for about half and hour, you can still encounter the odd one out in the wild.

When it comes to catching, though, all Meltan immediately revert to Ditto, so you can't add any to your collection or PokeDex. At least for now.

So, what do we do right now?

If you see Meltan out and about, catch it. It's a great way for anyone who hasn't completed the Ditto requirement of the Mew quest to finally get it out the way, and it's a fine way to find a good Ditto if you haven't gotten one yet.

Other than that, there's not much else we can do for now but wait for more information, likely when Pokémon Let's Go hits stores next month.
