Logitech throws their hat in with ergonomics with their first foray into vertical mice

MX Vertical is Logitech's latest mouse and the company's first submission to the ergonomics community. As the name implies, it's a vertical mouse designed to improve posture, reduce muscle strain, and provide an overall more comfortable experience for people that sit behind a computer all day.

The mouse sits at a 57-degree angle so your hand rests in what is best described as a natural handshake position. Through testing and surveying users with comfort issues, Logitech determined that the 57-degree angle is the best angle to position the hand for good posture, which contributes to overall ergonomic health.

It has an advanced optical tracker with up to 4,000 DPI. It has four different speeds, so you can customize how fast you need the tracker to work on different projects. The DPI switcher is located on top of the mouse near the thumb. Click between four different customizable speeds.

It's outfitted with a 240mAh Lithium Polymer battery that Logitech claims lasts up to four months with regular use. When it does finally start to lose juice, you can fast charge it to get a full day's charge in just one minute.

Logitech's design team didn't just build a standard vertical mouse. A lot of research went in to making sure that the MX Vertical met the Logitech standard.

"We know that many computer users experience discomfort or pain in their hand, forearm and in their wrists," said Delphine Donne-Crock, general manager of creativity and productivity at Logitech. "To address this, we've created our most advanced ergonomic mouse yet, MX VERTICAL, designed with an innovative natural handshake position. The unique angle is optimized for an ergonomic posture and reduces both wrist pressure and forearm strain. With MX VERTICAL, you can maximize your productivity in comfort."

After lengthy research and scientific study, the company held a study of 51 people that have experienced discomfort from mouse use. None of them had ever used a vertical mouse before. Jeanne Iverson, CEO and Senior Principal Ergonomist at VSI Risk Management & Ergonomics Inc., worked on the study and found that more than 50% of people in the study had a decrease in discomfort using a beta version of the MX Vertical. Men, women, and people with small hands were represented in this study.

I note that specifically because, as someone whose hands are small, it is difficult to find an ergonomic mouse that fits me well. It will be interesting to see if my "tiny hands" will do OK with the MX Vertical.

You can preorder the MX Vertical starting today for $99.99. It is expected to start shipping in September.
